The Top 10 Reasons to Buy the Sarah’s Silks Play Frame

Our home isn’t very Instagram friendly. Yellow walls that we haven’t painted yet, plus older crown moulding and a 1940’s aesthetic never really lends itself to “bright and airy”. Anything we bring into our 1200 square foot fixer-upper needs to be worth the space. This also goes for toys. We carefully curate the larger toys that V is given for maximum fun for the space.

Enter the Sarah’s Silks Play Frame. The frame itself comes with your choice of giant silk (optional if you already own some) and 4 play clips. We have had ours for roughly three weeks and it has pretty much taken over our day-to-day play around here. But don’t take this at face value. Here are 10 reasons you need to buy one of your own.

1. Ease of set up: Grab a pencil so that you can jot down what you’ll need to set up the play frame. Ready? Okay. Four strips of already provided Velcro. Whew! Hope you got that. I’ll say it again. To set up the play frame, you just need four strips of Velcro that are already included.

2. Smaller footprint than most “fort” type toys. Unlike the Nugget, Fortzee, Blocksy, or other tents, the Play Frame can do something remarkable: hide. When done with the day’s play, the play frame folds up and can be easily stored under a couch or behind a china cabinet. Bet you can’t find our Play Frame hiding in this picture. No, seriously…you can’t.

3. Versatile: Whatever the decor in your home, there is a giant play silk that will match. The giant size is the size intended to be used, but we made some really dynamic and colorful builds using our standard 35″ square silks.

4. Eco-friendly: The three pieces of the play frame are made in California from polar wood grown in the U.S. This helps reduce the carbon footprint involved in the making of the toy. It also makes for a beautiful toy – wood grain and variations.

5. Imaginary play: This is a castle. This is clubhouse. This is a cabin in the middle of the woods. With various silks to use, this play frame is only limited by your little one’s imagination.

6. Ready for indoor or outdoor play: As you can see in the photographs below, this is a suitable toy for both the inside and outside. We first took it to our driveway, since I was a little nervous about the morning dew staining the boards green. But once the day heated up a bit, we took the plunge. And she loved it! We spent several hours picking flowers, sitting inside, playing hide and seek. It was a truly magical encounter. One we’ve repeated several times since.

7. Independent play: There is something to be said for a toy that encourages independent play on one’s own. The play fort, while a social toy, can also be used by the solitary child. It’s a great way to take a step back, examine feelings during a rough day, or get some peace and quiet for a new reader.

8. Great alternative to culturally appropriated tipis: This is a big thing for me. Nary a beautiful playroom photo exists, without a tipi. The desire to have a segmented space, a room within a room, has led to the rise in tipi popularity. Children between 0 to 6 love the concept of cozy spaces, but as Child of the Redwoods explains, “the tipi is not a Montessori material, and it is not relevant to the Montessori method”. I’m here to suggest that this is the perfect alternative.

9. Length of use: With the recommended maximum age at 9 years old, this is the epitome of a long-lasting toy. Toddlers can use it for creating an imaginary world, big kids can use it for a study nook.

10. No furniture involved: This may seem trite, but after the 305th time you’ve put couch cushions back together, it can be a relief to build a secure fort without them. It also is extremely welcoming for the four legged members of the family!
